🚗 Select Your Preferred Car Expense Claim Method
Cents per Kilometre Method (Logbook NOT required). You can claim a fixed rate of 85 cents per kilometre (2023–24 rate) for up to 5,000 work-related kilometres per year. No receipts for fuel or maintenance are required. However, you must be able to reasonably estimate the kilometres travelled for work, ⚠️ This method is simpler, but limited to a maximum of $4,250 (5,000 km x $0.85). 2. Actual Expenses Method (Logbook REQUIRED) This method allows you to claim a percentage of all car-related expenses, based on your work-use percentage (calculated from a 12-week logbook). ✅ You can claim:Fuel and oil ,Registration , Insurance, Servicing and repairs ,Tyre replacements, Car cleaning ,Lease payments (if applicable) , Depreciation (if owned). 📘 You must keep a valid 12-week logbook and provide receipts for all expenses.

⚠️To claim work-related car expenses using the logbook method, you must upload a valid 12-week car logbook that clearly tracks your vehicle usage. ✅ Your logbook must include: Dates of each work-related journey, Starting and ending odometer readings ,Total kilometres travelled per trip , Purpose of the trip (e.g., client meeting, job site visit) ,Vehicle details (make, model, registration) ⚠️ The logbook must cover a continuous 12-week period and reflect your typical work-related driving pattern. The percentage of work use will be calculated based on this record and applied to your total annual car expenses. 📘 A physical car logbook can be purchased from Officeworks or most stationery suppliers. ✅Only provide expensed details related to occupation-specific, protective, or uniform clothing is tax-deductible. ✅This includes uniforms that display a company logo or are required by your employer, safety sunglasses, non-slip shoes or steel-cap boots, and protective creams or sunscreen used for work purposes. You can also claim laundry and dry-cleaning costs for eligible work clothing. ❌ You do not need to provide details of general or everyday clothing (e.g., suits, plain black pants, office shoes), as these are not deductible, even if worn for work.
✅ Work-related Self-Education expenses must be directly related to your current employment and help you maintain or improve the skills and knowledge required for your job. For example, an aged care worker studying a Diploma in Nursing would be considered directly related. ✅ Examples self education expenses include course fees, textbooks, stationery, computer equipment, internet costs, and other study-related expenses. The education must have a direct connection to your current job role —❌ not a future career change or unrelated field of study
✅Home Office Expenses may be claimed if you work from home as part of your paid employment (❌not just for occasional after-hours work to catch up). ✅You may claim a portion of running expenses and equipment purchases, including: Desk or table, Office chair, Laptop or desktop,Computer,Printer or scanner, Mobile phone (work-related portion), Monitor, webcam, or keyboard, Bookshelf or filing cabinet, 🔌 Running Costs (work-related portion only): Electricity (lighting, cooling, heating), Gas (if used for heating or powering office equipment),Internet bill,Phone bill (landline or mobile).⚠️ You must estimate your average weekly hours worked from home and provide a reasonable basis for your percentage of work-related use.
✅ You can claim the purchase price of the phone or monthly subscription. You can only claim mobile phone expenses if the phone is used directly for work purposes, such as contacting clients or suppliers. ❌Receiving your work roster, checking emails, or communicating with your employer about your schedule does not qualify as work-related use. ⚠️If your phone is used for both work and personal use, please estimate the work-related usage percentage and provide supporting evidence (e.g., usage summary or diary over a 4-week representative period).
You can claim the cost of equipment or items that are directly connected to performing your work duties. ✅ Examples of deductible items include: Laptop or desktop computer – for office work, report writing, remote access, etc, Chef knives and kitchen tools – for professional chefs and kitchen staff, Toolkits and power tools – for tradespeople such as electricians or carpenters, Specialist software – used specifically for your role (e.g., accounting, design, programming), Headphones or microphone – if required for calls or virtual meetings, Work bags or cases – if used to carry work-related tools, devices, or documents., You must provide receipts and a brief explanation of how each item relates to your current employment. Items used for both work and personal purposes must be apportioned accordingly.
Please provide details of any other work-related expenses that are directly connected to your employment. ✅ Examples include: Professional body membership or registration fees (e.g., AHPRA, CPA, Nursing Board), Union fees,Work-related magazines, journals, or subscriptions , Work-related seminars, conferences, or training courses , Working with Children Check or Police clearance (if required for your job) , First aid training (if required by your employer) , Protective items not already listed (e.g., safety gear, ID badges) ,Licensing or renewal fees (e.g., forklift license, white card),Work-related software or cloud storage subscriptions (e.g., Adobe, Dropbox) Please provide receipts and a brief explanation of how each expense relates to your current employment.
✅ You may claim a deduction for donations made to registered Australian charitable organisations. Examples of eligible charities include: Red Cross Australia , World Vision Australia, The Smith Family, Salvation Army, St Vincent de Paul Society ,Beyond Blue , Cancer Council Australia , RSPCA Australia , Fred Hollows Foundation , UNICEF Australia ❌ Raffle tickets, fundraising event tickets, and overseas charity donations are not deductible.
